Master of Arts in the field of East Asian Studies (MAEAS)
The degree of Master of Arts in the field of East Asian Studies (MAEAS) is a postgraduate degree offered by the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Hong Kong. The MAEAS programme examines the political, economic, cultural, and social experience of East Asia. It focuses on Korean and Japanese international relations, cultural studies, and intercultural communication, while placing Asia in a global context. Students are taught in an interdisciplinary manner by leading scholars in the field. Opportunities to travel to and study abroad are included. Applicants are expected to have already achieved an advanced level of study in the Japanese, Korean, or Russian language. This programme prepares students for further study at the PhD level in a variety of Arts fields or advancement in the professional job market.

Engages with key issues in contemporary Asian international relations and cultural studies
Focuses particularly on Korea, Japan and/or Russia
Encourages travel to or study in Korea, Japan or Russia
Incorporates guest lectures from outside scholars
Uses predominantly English medium of instruction with some learning options in Korean, Japanese, and Russian

We are proud to inaugurate the Master of Arts in the field of East Asian Studies programme in the 2026-27 academic year.
This programme embodies the key strengths of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Hong Kong: achieving mastery of one or more of the world’s major languages, pursuing continual growth and proficiency in intercultural communication, and developing innovative methods to investigate phenomena affecting the world in the past, present, and future.
Building upon more than twenty years of experience in global and area studies, and the collective expertise of specialists in a broad variety of academic disciplines, this programme welcomes prospective students and other relevant stakeholders to explore this intellectually rich curriculum that will prepare future graduates of the programme to become productive and influential leaders in both regional and international settings.
